A double-bind is a message so structured that it both (i) asserts something, and (ii) asserts something about its own assertion such that (iii) assertion i contradicts assertion ii. Furthermore, it is necessary that the recipient of the message be incapable of stepping outside the frame of contradiction set up by these conflicting assertions, such that he or she oscillates between them but cannot resolve the contradiction by means of some sort of meta-assertion” (Pragmatics of Human Communication: A Study of Interactional Patterns, Pathologies, and Paradoxes, Faber, Londres, 1968, p.212). Despite all its efforts, it will be always a dyad and not a monad, but a dyad in rebellion against the horror of one-way communication, that is, of the fantasy double bind of wrestling with the mighty dead.” (The Anxiety of Influence: A Theory of Poetry, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1975, p.71).
